Tokyopop and Planetwide Media have announced a planned release during spring 2007 of the Tokyopop Manga Creator. The software allows people to create their own manga using Tokyopop media (such as logos and characters), which they can then post to the net, email, or print.

Seven Seas Entertainment launches Yuri manga line

Seven Seas Entertainment announced plans for a new line of manga, called Strawberry, focusing on yuri titles (girl/girl relationships). Strawberry will debut in 2007 with Sakurako Kimino’s "Strawberry Panic" and Mera Hakamada’s "Saigo no Seifuku" (The Last Uniform).

Top 10 English language manga releases

Publishers Weekly are issuing a monthly listing of the top 10 graphic novels in the US and its no surprise that in the first listing eight of the ten titles are manga. In fact, the popularity of "Naruto" is outstanding, with volume 11 in first place, volume 10 in sixth place and volume 9 in ninth place.

Music Choice are selling Optimum Releasing's Studio Ghibli DVDs at a bargain price of £8.95. Apparently there are also several ADV titles in the sale at only £2.97!
Sweatdrop Studios release two "how-to-draw" books

Anyone who has been to a UK anime convention in recent years, or reads "Neo" magazine, will have been aware of Sweatdrop Studios manga workshops and they now have two new "How-to-draw" manga books. "Drawing Manga" by Selina Dean went on sale on 4th September 2006, with "Draw Manga" from Sweatdrop Studios being released on 15th October 2006.

The nice people from the International Manga and Anime Festival (IMAF) have been in touch to say that this years manga and animation design competition is now open for entries. The festival itself will take place from Friday 10th to Tuesday 14th November 2006. Once again the venue is County Hall, Westminster, London.

Top 10 people in the US anime industry

The latest "Retailers Guide to Anime/Manga" from ICv2 not only includes the list of the top 10 manga properties (with "Naruto" heading up the list) and anime properties (lead by "Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children"), but they have also compiled a list of the 10 most powerful people in the American anime industry. Top of the list is Gen Fukunaga, President and CEO FUNimation Entertainment.

Mainichi Daily News reveals "Manglish"

The Japanese web site "Mainichi Daily News" have taken a new approach to publishing new stories on their MangaTown site.
While the stories are still published in Japanese, if you move your cursor over the Japanese text, a pop-up box appears with an English translation. MDN have termed this concept "Manglish".

PSP Game spawns a new manga

There are quite a large number of manga (and anime) that have had spin off games, but the number of games that have lead to spin off manga is much smaller. The US company Seven Seas have nwo increased this number with the announcement that in 2007 they will be publishing a shoujo manga based on the PSP game "Death Jr.".

Two more manga on the way from Digital Manga

Digital Manga have issued a press release confirming the acquisition of two new manga titles; "Princess Princess" by Mikiyo Tsuda and "Enchanter" by Izumi Kawachi. The first volume of the "Enchanter" is due to be released on 1st July 2006, while the first volume of the "Princess Princess" manga will follow in November.

There has been controversy in the past over what actually constitutes a comoc being manga.
Several US publishers have been releasing an increasing amount of manga created outside Japan. Chief of these is Tokyopop, who in the past called these titles "OEL Manga" (Original English Language). They had tried to use the term "World Manga", but it never really took off. Now they have decided to label manga created outside Japan as "Global Manga".

The Guardian have a state of the industry piece from Joel Rickett (deputy editor of The Bookseller). In the article he comments on recent news (previously reported here) that the big publishers like Random House and HarperCollins are all interested in the market. However he does suggest right at the end that manga is only really of interest to teenagers

Manga Still a Big Story at Dark Horse

This weeks Publishers Weekly Comic Week takes a look at Dark Horse Comics. They plan to release 20 new manga titles in 2006, bringing the total number of manga titles for the year to 70. Titles on this years schedule include Shirow Masamune's "Ghost in the Shell: 1.5"; and two new series from Kazuo Koike: "Path of the Assassin" and "Crying Freeman". Dark Horse are also continuing with their horror line. They will release five to six horror books this year, including "Octopus Girl" by Tohru Yamazaki and the series "Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service" by Eiji Ohtsuka and Housui Yamazaki.

New manga deal between Tokyopop and HarperCollins

In a turnaround from Tokyopop's February statement that US book trade distribution would continue through Perseus Books and CDS, there has now been an announcement that from June this distribution will instead be handled by HarperCollins. However the more interesting news to Tokyopop's manga readers is that the two publishers will look to collaborate on as many as 24 manga adaptations of HarperCollins prose novels.

Del Rey manga coming to the UK

Del Rey release some of my favourite English language manga translations in the US - such as "xxxHOLiC" and "Tsubasa", and their parent company Random House has now announced they will be launching 15 titles in August 2006 priced at £5.99 each, with 45 titles (over 7 series) to be published by December 2006. The series will launch under the imprint name Tanoshimi.

Love Manga have compiled their top 50 English language manga sales for February 2006. Top of the list is "Trigun Maximum" volume 8, followed by "Rurouni Kenshin" volume 23 and "Bleach" volume 11. The only initial volume to make the top 10 is "Loveless" at number 9.
