SFX unleashes anime special

We were informed that Future Publishing would be releasing a one-off anime and manga magazine under its "SFX Magazine" label a few months ago, and following the issue of their press release we can finally let everyone else know too.
Available from Wednesday 6th December 2006, the 132 page special comes with a DVD containing an epsiode of Samurai Gun and a double sided A2 poster, with Naruto on one side and artwork from Final Fantasy XII on the other.

Tokyopop Manga Creator announced

Tokyopop and Planetwide Media have announced a planned release during spring 2007 of the Tokyopop Manga Creator. The software allows people to create their own manga using Tokyopop media (such as logos and characters), which they can then post to the net, email, or print.

UK premiere of Satoshi Kon's Paprika

The Leeds International Film Festival is well known for holding the UK premier of many top anime feature films. In previous years we have had "Millenium Actress", "Steamboy" and "Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence". This year the anime premiere is Satoshi Kon's eagerl awaited new feature film "Paprika".
The only other anime being shown during the festival are 4 episodes of another Satoshi Kon anime - "Paranoia Agent", but there are a whole raft of Japanese live action features (a full list of which you will find in the extended version of this news story).

Borders book shops are offering two manga from a selection of the "Tanoshimi" line for a bargain price of £10.
Music Choice are selling Optimum Releasing's Studio Ghibli DVDs at a bargain price of £8.95. Apparently there are also several ADV titles in the sale at only £2.97!

Sweatdrop Studios release two "how-to-draw" books

Anyone who has been to a UK anime convention in recent years, or reads "Neo" magazine, will have been aware of Sweatdrop Studios manga workshops and they now have two new "How-to-draw" manga books. "Drawing Manga" by Selina Dean went on sale on 4th September 2006, with "Draw Manga" from Sweatdrop Studios being released on 15th October 2006.

Just a quick reminder that Jonathan Ross's Japanorama returns this evening (Thursday 7th September 2006). The new series kicks off at 11pm on BBC Three (available to digital viewers in the UK) and is described as "a madcap tour of the coolest, cutest and strangest culture on the planet".

DDR:UK Robbery

DDR:UK have been providing games services to most large UK anime and manga events for years (including London MCM Expo, AmeCon and Ayacon). But now we unfortunately have to report that on Friday 18th August £25,000 of gear was stolen from the DDR:UK equipment store - effectively wiping them out. We have also been informed that the AmeCon manga library was also vandalised, book by book.
If anyone has any information concerning this theft, please get in touch with either ddruk.com or Kingston upon Thames Police Station.

Yamato have announced a new Ikki Tousen (Battle Vixens) Battle Sonsaku figure. Many figures in the market today have a certain amount of fan service, but with this figure it seems that Yamato are taking it to another level. The figure comes with an underwear revealing mirrored base, and the plastic breasts are described as "pliable".

Brazil wins World Cosplay Summit

Cosplayers from Germany, Italy, Spain, France, Singapore, China, Thailand, Brazil and Japan all took part at this years World Cosplay Summit - with a pair of cosplayers having being chosen from each country during national heats.
In the final, the Brazillian team won with a cosplay based on Angel Sanctury. The Japan Web Team came in second, with the Italian team in third place.

Fan guide and RPG publisher goes out of business

Guardians of Order, the Canadian publisher of both the "BESM" anime/manga role play game and the ultimate fan guide series have ceased trading operations. Guardians of Order published "The Sailor Moon RPG" in 1998 and since then have been at the forefront of licensed anime RPGs, from standalone books like "El-Hazard RPG and Resource Book" to "Ultimate Fan Guides". The announcement does mention that the next release of "BESM" will still appear from another publisher.

Hong Kong figure company sign partnership with Broccoli International

UART (a collectable figure company based in Hong Kong) have agreed a partnership deal with Broccoli International for North American distribution from companies like Diamond Comics. THis should help to reduce the lead time between figures being designed, and making their way onto the international market.

Top 10 people in the US anime industry

The latest "Retailers Guide to Anime/Manga" from ICv2 not only includes the list of the top 10 manga properties (with "Naruto" heading up the list) and anime properties (lead by "Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children"), but they have also compiled a list of the 10 most powerful people in the American anime industry. Top of the list is Gen Fukunaga, President and CEO FUNimation Entertainment.

UK Adult Swim details

Anime UK News have spotted that starting at midnight (for two hours) on the 7th July 2006 Adult Swim will begin its UK broadcast on the Bravo digital TV channel. The Adult Swim program block is scheduled to air every night.

Japanese investment for ADV

On Monday 26th July 2006 the Sojitz Corporation announced on the Nikkei Net a substantial investment in A.D. Vision by Japan Content Investments (JCI), an investor group led by the Sojitz Corporation in cooperation with the Development Bank of Japan (DBJ) and KlockWorx. A separate capital commitment came from ARM, a JCI subsidiary.
