London MCM Expo this weekend

Just a quick reminder that the London MCM Expo will be on this coming weekend (Saturday 28th October and Sunday 29th October) at the Excel Conference Centre in Docklands, London.

The Expo organisers have now issued a provisional agenda for the event and, as usual, we have produced our own check list of the events taking place which we believe will be of most interest to anime and manga fans.

Japanese films at the London Film Festival

The BFI 50th London Film Festival is currently running in London's capital

"Big Bang Love, Juvenile A (Shijuroku-oku Nen no Koi)" starts its screening on 19th October 2006 and is Takashi Miike's adaptation of Masaki Ato's homo-erotic manga "Elegy for Boy A"

The only anime being shown during the festival are the short (3 minute) films "Norabbits' Minutes".

Tokonatsu announce a spin-off event for gamers

Tokonatsu-Gaming is a non-profit gaming event run for PC owners and console users. It is run in association with the UK Anime Festival Tokonatsu.

Attendees will be given the opportunity to see and play a wide range of games from the 'classic' right through to the 'state of the art'.

The event will be held in Woburn, England, between the 13th and 15th of April 2007.

Japan Day returns to Mancester

From 11:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday 21st October 2006, the Japan Society North West are holding "a celebration of Japanese culture" at the Great Hall, Manchester Town Hall, Albert Square, Manchester, England. Admission is free.

No live act at the Halloween J Pop Go

The next "J Pop Go" music evening is scheduled to be held once again at Cafe Manga from 7pm on the night of Saturday 28th October 2006. They had hoped to have live music in the form of "Shinonome Orchestra", but unfortunately they will now be unable to perform.

Anime convention announced for Northern Ireland in 2007

The Tomo-Dachi committee have announced they intend to hold their second convention during 2007 at the University of Ulster Magee Campus in Derry, Northern Ireland. The event is provisionally scheduled to be held between 31st August and 2nd September 2007.

Anime screenings at the London MCM Expo

The next London Movies Comics Media Expo takes place on 28th to 29th October 2006 in London's Excel exhibition hall and they have now announced anime that will be playing during the show. The main news is that for the first time you will need to bring ID with you to see Samurai Gun, which is described as "an 18-rated blood-thirsty action saga". The other anime titles being previewed by ADV will be; Jinki: Extend, This Ugly Yet Beautiful World, and Maburaho.

UK premiere of Satoshi Kon's Paprika

The Leeds International Film Festival is well known for holding the UK premier of many top anime feature films. In previous years we have had "Millenium Actress", "Steamboy" and "Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence". This year the anime premiere is Satoshi Kon's eagerl awaited new feature film "Paprika".

The only other anime being shown during the festival are 4 episodes of another Satoshi Kon anime - "Paranoia Agent", but there are a whole raft of Japanese live action features (a full list of which you will find in the extended version of this news story).

FuyuCon accommodation details

FuyuCon (the new UK anime convention, due to be held at the Britannia Hotel in Nottingham from 19th to 21st October 2007) have now released details of the accommodation that will be available at the venue.

Single rooms start at £50 (with a minimum stay of 2 nights) while double rooms are £80 (also with a 2 night minimum stay).

Studio Ghibli in Bradford

Saturday 28th October is International Animation Day 2006 and one of the first British representatives to take part is The National Mueseum of Photography, Film and Television, who will be showing; "My Neighbour Totoro", "Spirited Away" and "Princess Mononoke".

FUGU at the Fly

There is a new club night hosted at The Fly, New Oxford Street, London - FUGU. Due to run every third Thursday of the month, the first evening will start at 7pm on 21st September with a screening of Manga Entertainment's movie "Tetsujin 28".

Voice Acting Course

DDR:UK Robbery

DDR:UK have been providing games services to most large UK anime and manga events for years (including London MCM Expo, AmeCon and Ayacon). But now we unfortunately have to report that on Friday 18th August £25,000 of gear was stolen from the DDR:UK equipment store - effectively wiping them out. We have also been informed that the AmeCon manga library was also vandalised, book by book.

If anyone has any information concerning this theft, please get in touch with either ddruk.com or Kingston upon Thames Police Station.

J-Rock arrives in London

Anyone interested in Japanese music and living in London will probably be aware of the "J-Pop Go!" evenings that have been held at Manga Cafe, County Hall, London - but this weekend the place is being give over to J-Rock instead. The event is due to take place on 29th July 2006, with the doors opening at 8pm. The event is only for people 18 and over.

International Manga and Anime Festival 2006 announce competition details

The nice people from the International Manga and Anime Festival (IMAF) have been in touch to say that this years manga and animation design competition is now open for entries. Final call for Tomo-Dachi

Unfortunately we will not be able to attend Tomo-Dachi (the first anime convention for Northern Ireland), due to be held next weekend in Londonderry, as it clashes with Japan Expo in Paris - but we have now been forwarded a copy of the final press release. This includes news that website "sendit.com" will be attending and selling discounted anime DVDs.

Get ready for Japan Expo

Like many other people in Europe we are making final preparations for this years Japan Expo, due to take place just outside Paris on the 7th to 9th July 2006.

Japan Expo is the largest manga and anime event in the western world. The first expo had 3,200 attendees and has steadily increased with the organisers expecting over 60,000 people to attend this year.

"The Place Promised In Our Early Days" on UK Tour

ADV Films have issued a press release concerning UK screenings of Makoto Shinkai's "The Place Promised in Our Early Days". There have been several screenings already and (as already reported) it is due to be shown on the 9th July 2006 at The Barbican in London. We now know that the film will also be shown at the National Film Thatre will also be showing the film from 18th to 20th August 2006, with another potential screening being lined up for September.

FuyuCon 2007 e-mail Newsletter

Its only been a week since we posted details about FuyuCon (the English convention due to be held from 19th to 21st October 2007 in Nottingham), and they have now issued an email newsletter. This confirms the guest (Helen McCarthy) and registration costs, but goes on to confirm further details of the event. There will be; 3 video rooms, 2 fan bars, a "genuine" artists alley and a whole floor of the hotel dedicated to dealers.

More announcements from Scotlands first anime convention

Auchinawa, the 4 day anime fandom convention due to be held from 30th November to 3rd December 2006 in Glasgow Scotland, have made several announcements in their latest press release.

The first is that they haveadded to their list of attending web comic artists with the inclusion of Scott Ramsoomair (VGCats).

They have also put out an open call for band members, gophers and event organisers as well as asking people to submit music videos and articles for the convention booklet.

Anime showing at London's Barbican Centre

The Family Film Club at the Barbican Centre in London will be showing a Studio Ghibli film for three consecutive weeks.

"My Neighbour Totoro" (Tonari no Totoro) - 1st July 2006

"Kiki's Delivery Service" (Majo no Takkyûbin) - 8th July 2006

"Spirited Away" (Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi) - 15th July 2006

Please remember that this is a family film club and all adults must be accompanied by children.
