SFX unleashes anime special

We were informed that Future Publishing would be releasing a one-off anime and manga magazine under its "SFX Magazine" label a few months ago, and following the issue of their press release we can finally let everyone else know too.

Available from Wednesday 6th December 2006, the 132 page special comes with a DVD containing an epsiode of Samurai Gun and a double sided A2 poster, with Naruto on one side and artwork from Final Fantasy XII on the other.

Pom Poko on Film4

Studio Ghibli's 1988 film "Pom Poko" is playing on UK TV at 3pm Sunday 12th November 2006 on Film4.

The story follows a community of magical shapeshifting raccoons who struggle to prevent their forest home from being destroyed.




ADV acquires Le Chevalier D'Eon for the UK

According to their latest press release, the UK video, TV and video on demand rights to Shochiku’s gothic mystery series "Le Chevalier D'Eon" have all been acquired by ADV. Currently no release date has been set.

Naruto delayed

We have some disappointing news for Naruto fans waiting for the UK DVD release of Narto series 1 part 2 from Manga Entertainment. The DVD was due to arrive on shop shelves from 6th November 2006. However at the recent London MCM Expo it was announced that the release has unfortunately been delayed until Boxing Day.




Anime screenings at the London MCM Expo

The next London Movies Comics Media Expo takes place on 28th to 29th October 2006 in London's Excel exhibition hall and they have now announced anime that will be playing during the show. The main news is that for the first time you will need to bring ID with you to see Samurai Gun, which is described as "an 18-rated blood-thirsty action saga". The other anime titles being previewed by ADV will be; Jinki: Extend, This Ugly Yet Beautiful World, and Maburaho.

UK premiere of Satoshi Kon's Paprika

The Leeds International Film Festival is well known for holding the UK premier of many top anime feature films. In previous years we have had "Millenium Actress", "Steamboy" and "Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence". This year the anime premiere is Satoshi Kon's eagerl awaited new feature film "Paprika".

The only other anime being shown during the festival are 4 episodes of another Satoshi Kon anime - "Paranoia Agent", but there are a whole raft of Japanese live action features (a full list of which you will find in the extended version of this news story).

Borders book shops are offering two manga from a selection of the "Tanoshimi" line for a bargain price of £10.

Music Choice are selling Optimum Releasing's Studio Ghibli DVDs at a bargain price of £8.95. Apparently there are also several ADV titles in the sale at only £2.97!

FUGU at the Fly

There is a new club night hosted at The Fly, New Oxford Street, London - FUGU. Due to run every third Thursday of the month, the first evening will start at 7pm on 21st September with a screening of Manga Entertainment's movie "Tetsujin 28".

Bandai Entertainment send warning to fansubbers

Its nothing new for North American anime distributors to threaten action against fansubbers. It happens every few years. Most respectable fansubbers won't touch a series once an English licensor is announced, but there are some groups who fail to abide by this unwritten code of conduct. The company threatening legal action this time is Bandai Entertainment, and the title they are concerned about is "Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society". Apparently, even though this is licensed by Bandai/Manga a number of fansub groups have said that they will be working on this title. Bandai have issued a press release announcing that if this happens they will take legal action against both the fansubbers and the download/distribution sites.

"Paprika" at Venice Film Festival

The 63rd Venice Film Festival runs from 30th August to 9th September 2006 and once again there is an anime feature film in the competition. "Paprika" is directed by Satoshi Kon ("Perfect Blue", "Millenium Actress", "Tokyo Godfathers" and "Paranoia Agent"), and animated by Madhouse ("Cardcaptor Sakura", "Chobits" and "NANA"). A theatrical release is planned for 2007.

Dates and Times for Studio Ghibli films appearing on Film Four

Nausicaa.Net (the Hayao Miyazaki web portal) have published the preliminary dates and times when the Studio Ghibli/Miyazaki films will be shown on the UK digital TV station Film Four. The films due to be shown are; "The Castle of Cagliostro", "Kiki's Delivery Service", "Princess Mononoke", "Castle in the Sky", "My Neighbour Totoro", "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" and "Porco Rosso". Studio Ghibli season on Film Four

As anyone in the UK is probably aware from the extensive advertising, the digital TV channel Film Four is no longer a subscription channel, and is free for anyone with a digital box. Of special interest to anime fans is that the FAQ on their website states that they will be showing 7 Studio Ghibli films during August. The only downside is that they will be shown during the afternoon, so you will probably need to set your video recorders.
